How Medication-Assisted Treatment Works

MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to address both the physical and psychological sides of addiction. These medications — like buprenorphine, naltrexone, and methadone — help:

  • Reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings
  • Normalize brain chemistry disrupted by substance use
  • Support long-term engagement in recovery programs

At Team Recovery, MAT is never “just medication.” It’s a structured, clinically supervised plan customized to your goals, supported by ongoing therapy and accountability.

The goal of MAT is freedom — not dependence. Freedom to focus on your recovery, rebuild relationships, and reclaim daily life.

Medications We Use & What They Do

Different substances call for different approaches. Your care team will determine which option fits your needs.

  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone® / Subutex®) – Reduces cravings and withdrawal while blocking opioid effects
  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol®) – Prevents relapse by blocking euphoric effects of opioids or alcohol.
  • Methadone* – Stabilizes brain chemistry and reduces withdrawal for those with long-term opioid use.
  • Acamprosate (Campral®) – Helps maintain abstinence from alcohol by easing post-acute withdrawal.

All medications are prescribed and monitored by licensed medical professionals in collaboration with your therapist and case manager.

*Note, Team Recovery does not offer Methadone, however individuals who receive methadone at another agency are welcome to attend our treatment and reside in our sober living.
