How Medication-Assisted Treatment Works

MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to address both the physical and psychological sides of addiction. These medications — like buprenorphine and naltrexone — help:

Medications We Use & What They Do

Different substances call for different approaches. Your care team will determine which option fits your needs.

Buprenorphine (Suboxone® / Subutex®) – Reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking opioid effects.
Buprenorphine long-acting injection (Sublocade®) – Provides consistent, extended support to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid use disorder.
Buprenorphine extended-release injection (Brixadi®) – Provides extended-release support to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid use disorder.
Naltrexone (Vivitrol®) – Prevents relapse by blocking the euphoric effects of opioids or alcohol.

In addition, we may prescribe medications “PRN” (“as needed”) to assist with physical withdrawal symptoms and increase comfort during the early stages of recovery.

Medications prescribed by Team Recovery are monitored by our licensed medical professionals in collaboration with your therapist and case manager. If you already have an established MAT provider, we work alongside them to keep your care coordinated.

Please note: Team Recovery does not provide methadone. However, individuals who receive methadone from an established outside provider are welcome to attend our treatment programs and live in our recovery housing, and we coordinate directly with their provider as part of their care.
